Essential Water Safety Tips

Follow these guidelines to protect your family around pools, lakes, beaches, and bathtubs.

Never Leave Children Unattended

Designate a responsible adult as a "Water Watcher" who actively supervises children in and around water. No phone, no book—just watching.

Learn CPR

Every parent and caregiver should know CPR. In a drowning emergency, immediate CPR can be the difference between life and death.

Teach Your Children to Swim

Swimming lessons significantly reduce the risk of drowning. Children as young as 6 months can begin learning water survival skills.

Use Layers of Protection

Combine multiple safety measures: pool fences, door alarms, pool covers, and constant supervision. No single barrier is enough.

Know the Signs of Drowning

Drowning is often silent—no splashing or screaming. Look for: head low in water, eyes glassy, hyperventilating, or trying to swim but not moving.

Establish Pool Rules

No running, no diving in shallow water, no pushing, and always swim with a buddy. Consistent rules prevent accidents.

Seasonal Safety Tips

Different environments require different precautions. Stay safe wherever water activities take you.

Summer Pool Party Safety

  • Designate rotating water watchers (15-min shifts)
  • No diving in shallow water
  • Keep pool area clear of toys when not swimming

Beach & Open Water

  • Swim near lifeguards
  • Understand rip currents (swim parallel to shore)
  • Check water conditions before swimming
  • Never swim alone

Backyard Inflatable Pools

  • Empty and store upside down after each use
  • Never leave filled overnight
  • Same supervision rules as permanent pools
